Whew!

And the con is over and the kittycat is pooped. The current volunteer system didn't work very well - I wound up guarding the dealer's room door myself a time or two. I suspect this is mostly due to the way it's been very informal in the past. So I think next year I'm going to treat this more like, say, a fishing license. If you even think you might want to help out in any part of the con, you must sign the legal release form (which should go on the membership form), and get a Volunteer badge. This doesn't obligate you to work any more than a fishing license obligates you to catch a fish, but is required before you so much as help staff move tables. There'll be some sort of way to earn small or great rewards depending on how much work you do.

Or anyway that's a rough outline - I'm starting up a mailing list for those interested in planning this, or in volunteering at the con. Or at least I will be once I recover.

The con was fun, at least what of it I saw when I wasn't stuck behind a desk. (OK, coulda been worse - I poached the most comfortable chair in the lobby, and spent a fair amount of my time reading Kevin and Kell, or Tom Holt's aptly named "You Don't Have To Be Evil To Work Here, But It Helps".) I got to meet Marc Gunn, musical guest of honor thanks to his cd "Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers", which I picked up a copy of and now have playing on my computer as I write this. And got to hang out with a lot of folks I don't see very often.

More later. I should be asleep.

lol isn't Marc a trip? =p

I know our con has volunteer registration... and we usually have more than we know what to do with =p for everything except cleanup.

If you want to hear more of Marcs stuff check out the bards at http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=34415119&MyToken=f19f3468-1011-4081-bc18-d68a19e6658c

From there you can see both Marc and Andrew's myspace pages as well as links to the website and such.

That he is. He even adopted a tail for his concert which contained a lot of feline versions of classic folk. Long live the Bards!

My problem is, the more formal the process, the less likely I'm interested. Ask for a hand while I'm walking past and it's not a big deal.

And as long as you've signed the legal mumbo-jumbo, and thus gotten the volunteer badge, you'd be free to lend that hand; maybe even get rewarded for it. I'll be writing this up in more detail for the ML before long, and starting up a forum topic for discussing what to do for next year's volunteer program (especially inviting anybody who joined this year - I've got a few email addresses to write to.)
