Black Hole Snacks on Super Jupiter

But apparently didn't finish its meal.  Tsk.  :)

Black Hole Caught Snacking on 'Super Jupiter' Planet

Black Hole Snacks on Super Jupiter

The black hole at the center of galaxy NGC 4845 is seen snacking on a giant gas planet or "failed star" in this screenshot from an ESA animation.

In a cosmic first, astronomers have discovered a black hole chowing down on what may be a giant rogue planet.

The supermassive black hole didn't finish off its meal, which scientists say was either a huge Jupiter-like planet wandering freely through space or a brown dwarf, a strange object that's larger than a planet yet still too small to trigger the internal fusion reactions required to become a full-fledged star.

“This is the first time where we have seen the disruption of a substellar object by a black hole," study co-author Roland Walter, of the Observatory of Geneva in Switzerland, said in a statement. "We estimate that only its external layers were eaten by the black hole, amounting to about 10 percent of the object’s total mass, and that a denser core has been left orbiting the black hole."

Magical! Well, it wouldn't be if it had happened to Jupiter, we'd have too many problems to appreciate it, but from here ... Amazing!

Very Neat!
You share some very neat stuff. Thank you!

FWIW: Thnidu's picture of Hedgeh's door was clear in my browser (IE 8); interestingly, I'm having trouble seeing your picture of the black hole snack attack. It's clear when my friends page first loads, then abruptly right justifies and squishes into about 4 letters wide.

Re: Very Neat!
Sorry about that - to save time I just copied the whole thing over from the site instead of reformatting. I have just pulled all of the extant formatting including the placement stuff which probably caused your friend's problem, and replaced it with a simple img tag and some simple text formats. This should work.

As for Hedgeh, I'm using Firefox which generally works just fine - I suspect the image statement is somehow shielded by something NoScript blocked. In fact I found the link visible in the code, so it WAS downloading so who knows. I'm not having that problem with something else and don't care enough to really go chase it.

Re: Very Neat!
No worries, and thanks for fixing it. If it's not a 'post hoc' coincidence, the f-page loads noticeably quicker now (Augh! I *said* it!) ;-)

I mentioned thnidu's pic in case it was useful info. Win some, lose some!
