San Jose

The route from the hotel to the convention center passed by (or through, depending on how you wanted to go) a small park, containing at least one fountain and a sculpture. I can't help wondering whether.. not the artist who probably knew perfectly well, but whoever in the city accepted or commissioned the artwork had considered what this plumed serpent:

Would look like from across the street

Or a bit further away...

Alas, I'd have had to stand in the middle of a couple of really busy streets to get the effect the eye does as it approaches, but still...

That's right across the street from the hotel FC was at the last couple of years. You can imagine the laughs among the congoers.

I remember when that thing when in. The drawings the artist showed originally were a bit more awesome. With the snake raised to strike, wings extended, all of that. But the city kept jerking him around & cutting his budget, so he gave us ... this.

I figure it's the artist's revenge for the treatment he got. & a very good revenge it is.

Heh. What makes you think that wasn't what the artist had in mind? This is Califor-nigh-ay you're talking about.

As I said in the post, I don't doubt that was what the artist had in mind (and capplor's comment, above, pretty much confirms it.) I was wondering about the imagination of lack of same of whoever finally approved it.

As I said, this is the People's Republic of California, where imagination has been placed in custody of Hollyweird and Disney; thusly, no one else seems to have any.

Actually that seems to be endemic to bureaucracy anytime, anywhere. And let's not forget the imaginations of the countless reporters and journalists who visit LA, hang out in the bar, file copy they wrote before they left home, all alike, never realizing how amusing the rest of us find 'em. Come on out for a con sometime!
