I give up - The Yiddish Policemen's Union is going back to the library half read tomorrow.  Interesting, if ose, background, the old "determined detective bulls through to the TRUTH" plot... and I find myself putting the thing down every chapter to find something, anything more cheerful.  Today I hit the last straw, as Our Hero did something so mindblowingly dumb that I found myself considering the Eight Deadly Words*.  Someone with more tolerance for gritty street-level realism in an alternate universe may well enjoy it - in fact a number of someones must've or it'd hardly have won the Hugo... but I think I'm getting on with the rest of the stack.

Awww, that's sad, actually. I really liked Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. Sorry to hear that some of his other books aren't living up to his reputation.

Fact is I'm no great fan of dreary, dreary, drearier, drearier still, oh look, you just fell into the sewer... (or in this case, deliberately JUMPED into the sewer) as a plot mechanism. What was "the Amazing Adventures" about?

Kavalier and Clay is a fictional retelling of the Golden Age of comics through the eyes of two young Jewish boys in the 1930's and 40's in New York City. It's a really good read, actually, and I like a lot of the themes they play with, such as the idea of comic books as an Escapism from the events of WWII, and the superhero being born as protectors of justice and the people because of the fear of Hitler and the Axis Powers.

It's a serious read and not always the most cheery, but I really enjoyed the book. I think it was very evocative of the time period, and did a really good job of portraying the two main characters, Joseph Kavalier and Sammy Clay, sympathetically.

I had much the same problem with the book. Never made it past the 3rd chapter.
