At last!

After a day that seemed divided between scientifically illiterate politicians and dubious 'experts' with axes to grind the size of Buicks, someone on TV finally explains in reasonable style just what is inside a nuclear reactor, how it works, and what the problem seems to be in the Fukushima nuclear plant. Yes, of course, it's Rachel Maddow - see her site and click on the "What is a nuclear meltdown?" clip.

90% of the population is ignorant of nuclear matters, and are easily scared of what they don't understand - it's not helping that various media are exaggerating the threat, just like they did back in '79 over Three Mile Island.

What irritates me the most is when the sheeple demand information, and can't understand it, and take it out on the people they're depending on to keep them safe, who they don't listen to anyway...

Now you know why Public Relations is a viable career path... Explaining things to someone who has no knowledge of the subject is Not Easy, especially if you ARE highly knowledgeable in the field. For example, I would be equally correct in describing my icon as a picture of a Teuthowenia pellucida, or of a rare deep-sea glass squid that lives in the South Pacific, but the latter would give a lot more information to everybody but a few marine biologists. While a short explanation as to why I selected it for that icon (reminded me of a sciencefictional superbrain surveying the universe) would be better for non sf-fans than the detailed one (reminded me of Mentor of Arisia visualizing the Cosmic All) I would give those likely to be familiar with Doc Smith.

That noted, it is amazing what Google has done for trivia (and not such trivia) extraction... :)

Also you get better results when you don't think of your audience as "sheeple". Even (or even especially) if they are. Condescension communicates itself very, very well...

Now you know why I'm not in public relations.

And after all the times we've typed, you haven't figured out I'm a misanthrope? You're slipping, Kay.

Ah, but every misanthrope should have a Public Relations Representative, to keep the rest of mankind completely out of his or her hair! :)
