Sunday, songs, and garage doors

Sigh... in church today the pastor played the first part of Pachebel's Canon as a rather lovely illustration of how a community should work together. The sermon that followed was pretty good, alas Lynn Gold's "California Love Song" kept intruding itself into my thoughts. :) I may sing it for him sometime...

In other news, whilst lugging a lot of stuff temporarily into the garage to facilitate my daughter moving in, we found that my garage door is disintegrating. It's 30 or more years old, and is of the slab that swings up on hinges variety. All the ones I can find listed are of the newer roll up category. This would be fine, but apparently in order to install one I'm going to have to dismantle part of the garage interior shelving. While it may simply be the only way to get the old door off, I would at least like to try to find another like it if maybe not as massive. Especially if I can get one with a smaller door cut into it, like the current one, so I wouldn't have to open the whole door every single time I want to put something in the drier. But when I try googling "slab" or "single panel" door, I do not find what I'm looking for. Anybody know what the technical term for this type of garage door is?

Solid Garage Door should do the trick

That was quick! Thanks! Actually I tried that but didn't get very far. However, one of the sites Google just turned up may have given me the correct term: "Tilt Up". Mercifully the site also says it's probably available - I was beginning to worry there was some sort of code change requiring rollup, and the garage really isn't built for it. Now I'm off to check Angie's List.

Tilt Up

Well I know they are still available in Canada, because a house a couple of streets over had one replaced recently :)

Re: Tilt Up
Judging by the alacrity with which four of the six companies I found via Angie's list and emailed yesterday responded (two this morning while I was in a hurry to get out, two more on the house line's answering machine after I left), they do here, too. I've made an appointment for one to give me an estimate, and have to phone three more tomorrow to schedule them.

I also tried a general Google - one outfit sounded pretty good until I realized I had neglected to specify Southern California, and they were located in South Africa. :) Gotta love the Internet.

Re: Tilt Up

Um, yes. South Africa would complicate the delivery!
