Offline for a bit

I'm going to be missing from here starting at the middle of next week until I'm not sure when, because I'm going in for major abdominal surgery (hysterectomy). I've picked up an iTouch which I'll be using as a pocket library, having filled it up with a lot of books and things. I don't know if the hospital has wifi, and even if it does I'm probably not going to be up to much more than "go to bed with a book. If your eyes are open, read. If your eyes are shut, sleep." for awhile, interspersed with occasional 'You mean I can get up? Goodie!" walks. No promises on updates, though either niall_shapero or fabula_umbrae may provide them from time to time. With luck this should be it - all depends on what they find out from that organ once they extract it. Thing's been out of use for many years, so I don't really need it any more anyway. Prayers et al appreciated!

Whoops, nearly forgot - anybody know how to teach iTunes to back up to an external hard drive instead of my main one? Right now it is quite happy to load from the external drive, which is how I got all 8 gig of stuff I had on my Zen onto it, but now the fool object insists on trying to drop all of it onto my main hard drive which hasn't got the room. There OUGHT to be a way to configure iTunes for this, but hanged if I can find the fool thing. Suggestions?

Just to emphasize, it's not backing up. It's storing. That's the only copy it's got.

Plergb. All that stuff comes from files on my computer which are already backed up - if it's stuffing itself with duplicates of everything no WONDER it's such an egregious monster. Sounds like Apple's assuming most of your music will be downloaded from the net. Most of mine comes off CDs that you may not even FIND on the net. Sigh...

Frump...
Alas, that didn't work - though my moving of the pointer from iTunes Media on the laptop drive to the external hd worked, it only put about 79 meg on it, and added another gig or so to my laptop. Which isn't really enough to account for the music files unless it compresses them dramatically, but is still more than enough to cause me problems. Maybe if I delete iTunes and recreate it on the external drive? I simply cannot have this much crud on a little bitty laptop, and feeding it off the desktop would be too constricting.

Oh joy - I ask Search to find me all folders above 1 Meg in size, and it gives me all zip files above 1 Meg. Windows, you are Not Helping...

Couple more things about resetting your itunes preferences and putting stuff on an external:

Any time you happen to not have the external connected and try to do something with itunes it will reset to internal and you have to reset to external again. Check preferences before loading disks.

You can load the stuff you have on your internal to your external and erase it on your internal to save memory. Just be very careful not to create hundreds or thousands of duplicates, and/or accidentally erase your external hard drive and need to reload a few hundred CDs. Happened to me.

Hard drives are cheap enough, it's good to have 2 externals. Use 1 to back up the stuff you have on the other one in case one gets damaged. I'm doing that now. Wish I had before.

I currently use an external for backups. Out of my usual suspicious nature, I will be buying one specifically for the iTuns monster, which I won't have to back up because everything on it is electronically present ON the backup external, and it doesn't take long to tell it to scout out mp3s and reestablish them.

Oh nooooo! I hope all goes well in surgery, I surely do hate hospitals and doctors, but I'm sure I would like them a little more if I had an iPod with books on it, and lots of music, and other goodies.

Good luck! Sorry I can't be as much help by way of iTunes. It hates me. =(

Good luck! Hope you recover quickly and completely. Also hope that the diagnosis is such that you don't have to worry about future complications.

Oh gad, I'm so sorry to hear about the surgery. I'm sure you'll feel better afterwards, but it's really no fun.

Can't help with Itunes. I convert stuff into MP3 (even if grabbed from Itunes) and save it on the device of my choice.

Oh the stuff is in mp3; it came from my computer in the first place. There's no problem with my backups, just with iTunes insistence in storing a mirror of everything on the frippin' device. I shall go pick up a new external hd so as to not risk doing odd things to my backup disk and try patgund's suggestion.

Sorry this is late... I seriously need to keep up on LJ.

Prayers for the successful surgery and finding nothing once they remove all. We will miss you at the pub. Godspeed to you!

Thanks! I should be back at the pub in a week or so, however long it takes before as I can sit up in front of a keyboard for a bit, meanwhile tell everybody who has one Happy Birthday/Anniversary/whatever for me. :)
