They Dyed, and They Got Better...

Same blue dye in M&Ms linked to reducing spine injury

(CNN) -- The same blue food dye found in M&Ms and Gatorade could be used to reduce damage caused by spine injuries, offering a better chance of recovery, according to new research.
Rats injected with BBG not only regained their mobility but temporarily turned blue.

Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center found that when they injected the compound Brilliant Blue G (BBG) into rats suffering spinal cord injuries, the rodents were able to walk again, albeit with a limp.

The only side effect was that the treated mice temporarily turned blue.

The results of the study, published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences," build on research conducted by the same center five years ago.

That's amazing, though I just had the irreverent thought that Red Dye No 2 could have benefits...

And do not forget the healing properties of cyclamates. Ah, cyclamates, when Fresca tasted GOOD!

I began to suspect the accuracy of the article when the writer called the rodents rats in one paragraph and mice in the next.

I suppose someone could be spoofing CNN, but judging by what happens when you poke around this is their site. Weirder things have happened.

Actually that last could be the "this is not an important story so I don't have to proofread" effect. As usual, forgetting that when most people's first hand encounter with a reporter is limited to things like "the young man who came to the PTA installation and got all the names wrong", it reflects on the credibility of the entire field.
