Mother's Day

All in all, this was a nice Mother's Day even though I'm still recovering from the Annoying Two Week Cold. While I slept in, Nicolai made up enough chicken soup for an army, and I ate some when I got up. Ymmmm... Then Victoria came by to share in the soup, and hang out with me which was fun. She also borrowed my old Star Fleet uniform (which actually fits her amazingly enough; and equally amazingly enough despite being 30 odd years old and composed of an unknown polyester doubleknit is still wearable) for an upcoming con - apparently the newly released Star Trek movie brought out her inner geek... We wandered about the internet for awhile, and decided that this critter (from the Worth1000 Cryptozoo 9 contest) must be a juvenile Grandfather Bird from Terry Pratchett's Nation. :)

Yup! Can't you just see those things hacking up the bones of small animals early in the morning to welcome the sun?

Also the con I'm going to is Fanime. It didn't so much reawaken my inner geek as it did my inner scifi nerd. I'd forgotten how much I love cheesy scifi shows and stuff.

Yeppers - y'know, despite the fact I'd not heard of any such thing before the book (if you don't count owls, and they're rather more discrete), I still get the feeling that there have GOT to be real Grandfather Birds out there somewhere... :)

You're certainly welcome to my old ST uniform (which is, I might add, a Karen nee Schnaubelt now Dick original no less - I still recall her working on it and complaining "it's the right COLOR"), but if you want to get even older and cheesier you'll have to look elsewhere for a Dr. Who scarf - I haven't got one.

Sigh... I wish that I still fit in that thing - I'm actually old enough to make a believable admiral these days. Almost old enough to be a retired one, heaven help us...

I saw the old Starfleet uniform! Very cool! :D fabula_umbrae told me how difficult those darts were, so I was impressed!

Not my doing - Karen and some other cosplayers (don't recall who all was involved in this because it happened before I met most of 'em) devised it from careful examination of more film clips than I care to imagine. Then she made up a muslin, drew in the seams, and went from there. To nobody's surprise, she's a professional costumer these days. All I did was buy the fabric, and wear the uniform. (And resew the seams from time to time - the springiness of the doubleknit kept breaking the thread. I'm hoping modern threads are more resiliant, though not so much as to pull it apart.)

I did make up a different emblem since the character I was portraying was captain of a different starship, and at the time there appeared to be different emblems for each. Still have the emblem; Vicky said she'd rather get hold of an Enterprise one than borrow it. So it remains stuck to the Star Fleet Jumpsuit I designed for a fashion show competition. Didn't win. Am still amused by the fact that years later, when they came up for the uniforms for Next Gen, the design was rather similar. (Of course how many ways CAN you design a pocketless jumpsuit with a splash of color across the top?)
