Wrote the following on filkertom's HP and the Deathly Hallows SPOILER THREAD The Last for those who've finished the book and figured I might as well post it here. Spoilers, big ones. If you haven't read the thing and plan to, give it a skip.

It would have been nice for the author, given that for some reason she was determined to make the last book cover the same length of time all the others did, to recall that in Exodus when the Israelites spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness, we weren't required to read about every step. The Hero and his Friends have their Friendship Tested (in their wanderings with the One Ring soul-jar-on-a-string) is not that unusual a trope, but it can be handled in a chapter or two. Maybe three.

OK, my suspicions about JKR's objections to Snape Fandom have been confirmed. If you want someone's true allegiance to be a surprise, do not draw a large red X on his back. Recall the comment in Lord Of The Rings about agents of the enemy "seeming fairer and feeling fouler". Keeping characters from meshing with certain nasty stereotypes isn't a bad idea either.

Infodumps! IIIInfodumps!!!! Arrrrgggghhhhhhh!

Alas, I think a major bet was missed - I was expecting Hagrid to turn up to help the defenses with every form of dangerous magical beastie we'd seen in the entire series, including the spiders and a few blast-ended Skrewts. Never mind the opposition - just imagine the reactions of the defenders (you mean that's on OUR side????). :)

Leastwise this time iirc Voldy remembered to shoot first, then gloat when Harry gave him a free shot. Much good it did him, but what the heck.

I think there's a pretty good book in there but you have to disinter it.

Memo to self: If I ever take up novel writing, see if I can't find a financially independent editor who won't be afraid to edit regardless how popular I may become. It's fatally easy to fall in love with things that desperately need pruning. Oh, and make sure both hero and villain read the Evil Overlord list. :)

That and never be afraid to let characters be themselves. The plot will just have to accommodate.

OK, how many people in here think that five minutes after JKR left the scene with everybody mourning the dead that Fred's ghost came strolling up in back of George and announced in a conversational tone, "Hey,George, d'ya think this will scare off the shoplifters?"

(Sigh... what shoulda happened is that we see the twins take after something large with all the bangstuff on hand, there is a L*A*R*G*E explosion, from the blast rise two ghosts on broomsticks, who look at each other, say "Wicked!" in unison, and fly off to harass Voldemort. "Nyah, nyah you can't touch us!")

I have to admit, while I was reading the "seven-way Harry chase," I commented to a friend of mine that a very cynical part of me was wondering if JKR hadn't made Gred and Forge twins so that she could kill one of them off without feeling guilty because there was still one more.

Who knew she'd actually do it?

I'da thought it would make her feel MORE guilty for splitting them up.

I always figured that one of them would be a goner.

My hope was that their ghosts would be appointed new Hogwarts Poltergeist by the end of the book (with Peeves shaking his fist on the way out and muttering about "you meddling kids").

Also that one of their joke inventions would have a key role in defeating You-know-'oo, thus vindicating them in their mother's eyes for not being perfect academicians like Bill and Percy.

Seems to me, killing just one twin was cruel and lame. Shoulda been both, or neither. But there it is.

That's IT! The ghost of Sirius Black should've shown up during the final battle, so we could have Voldemort expiring to "I would've won if it hadn't been for you meddling kids and that DOG!"

OK, ok, I was up late reading fanfic. :)

When Harry and Hermione were listening in on the meeting with the goblins, and one person summoned a salmon for dinner, I was expecting Hermione to say, "Now why didn't I think of that?"
