OK - THIS is weird

Apparently somebody has set out to patent a storyline, as per this announcement from the US Patent Office. It's strange out...

Why bother with a patent that is only good for 15 years when a story copyright is good for 50 years after you're dead and gone??

Patent vs Copyright
If the storyline can actually be patented, that's much broader than the copyright (which comes for free anyway). One example, I suppose, might be the Sci-Fi channel original movies that ape cinematic releases. They don't infringe on the copyright of the originals, because it is the actual expression that is protected, but they might well violate a patent that protects the storyline.

Re: Patent vs Copyright
I truly hope this get thrown out. IP craziness is going to bring all innovation to a halt.

Re: Patent vs Copyright
Perhaps I should say, all stories derive from prior art (Gilgamesh, anyone?), and that's a Good Thing because of the infinite combinations and the fun involved in creating them.

If they patent thoughts next, we're all dead.

I'm sure that's coming. Microsoft will probably do it.

Re: Patent vs Copyright
From what my friend the patent attorney says, publishing the application is just the very first step, before all the other stuff you have to go through to actually get something patented. And there's a LOT of other stuff (and idiot filters and so forth.) It's just attracting more attention than most due to the whole "where do I BEGIN?!" mindlessness of it all. Which is not to say that it might not actually pass.. but the odds are agin it.

I suspect it would be worse if it wasn't such an awful storyline that he's tried to copyright!
