Actually they never got all that near to downtown Los Angeles, which is almost entirely to the north east of the 110x10 junction as you can see in the map. It zigzags from the airport to Exposition Park, through Inglewood, the area just east of View Park (where I grew up - if I still lived THERE I would definitely have walked over to Crenshaw to watch her go by), along MLK and to Exposition Park, across the street from USC.

I don't think you COULD get that thing through downtown which is a hilly grid of narrow streets. Maybe on the 110, but I think some of those overpasses would block the tail or even interfere with the width.
