Since it burned up on reentry as planned, but it did drop the sample capsule first, which has now been picked up..

Adelaide - A team of scientists flew to the Australian Outback on Monday and recovered a Japanese space capsule that they hope contains asteroid samples providing clues into the evolution of the solar system.

The Hayabusa explorer returned to Earth overnight after a seven-year, 6bn km journey, burning apart on re-entry in a spectacular fireball just after jettisoning the capsule.

It was the first time a spacecraft successfully landed on an asteroid and returned to Earth.

No, but that's really lovely. Let's hope her 7 year hunt brought back some nice juicy prey!

And soon contact will be lost with the lab that retrieved the capsule. Prepare for the coming apocalypse.

Samples from a sandpit... Hmm, Invasion of the Giant Space Ant Lion! :)

Even if there aren't any samples, they've proven the concept and can try again, with no glitches.
But I'm hoping they were successful. All that work for nothing ... this time 'round.

It was after all intended for a test of concept in the first place, and I must say they've already gotten their share of useful glitch feedback (bugs) already from the reasons it's 3 years later than originally intended. But I'm hoping for samples from that flying sandbox myself.
