I love LA

Well, Santa Monica anyway. Whilst I was out shopping with niall_shapero and fabula_umbrae last Saturday in 3rd Street Prominade in Santa Monica, a group of swimsuit-clad college-student age folks with Santa Claus hats jogged past us singing "The 12 Days of Christmas". Now how many places do you encounter great moments of surrealism like that? :)

This was after we went to see Avatar which is nifty even if it is the old exploiters vs the Noble Savages plot. Well... actually not quite if you take careful note of fine details I suspect even Cameron hasn't considered the implications of. But I'll be holding that discussion over in my Inksome journal probably tomorrow (worry not, I'll link from here) with people who have already seen the movie. Visually it's impressive, and most of the scientific howlers take place on the website, not on screen. So avoid the website and enjoy the movie. (Fair warning if you're watching it in 3D which you should if you can - I am not generally subject to Doom sickness, but at one point I turned my head during a rapid paced scene and got mildly dizzy. If you are, you may want to settle for a really large flatscreen version.)

Nowhere else. That's why it's called "Planet Hollywood".

Grin. Actually (looks both ways and whispers, conspiratorially) there's a lot more to Los Angeles than Hollywood. Santa Monica is a beach city, and they run to the delightfully funky.

Yes, I know, but you have to live with the tags you get, like it or not.

At least yours have a hint of class, as opposed to a state that boasts a town named Yeehaw Junction.

Who's complaining? I get to live here. This region has everything from beaches to mountains and conifer forest. Griffith Park, complete with observatory. Venice (even funkier than Santa Monica, in a good way). Winters so warm I haven't gotten to wear my Christmas vest this year.

That is charmingly surreal.

You're the second person whom I trust who's said that Avatar was nifty. I reckon I'll go to see it sometime. Although it may be a while, considering how slow I am as far as getting to movies--I finally saw Half Blood Prince at the two-dollar theatre sometime around Thanksgiving.

Well, you do live in a college town... I must get out there again some time, if only to go to Rula Bula again. :) Sounds like I want to shoot for winter so as to not melt into my socks.
