Manhattan synagogue makes $10G off of Westboro Baptist Church protest

A Manhattan synagogue turned a visit from hate-spewing demonstrators into a lucrative fund-raiser Sunday.
Leaders of Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, a West Village synagogue that caters to gays and lesbians, didn't want to ignore a planned visit by members of the rabidly anti-gay and anti-Semitic Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church.
Instead, they asked supporters to pledge a dollar or more for every minute that six protesters stood near their synagogue hurling epithets and holding signs that read "God Hates Fags" and "Jews Stole the Land."
The final haul after 50 minutes: $10,000.
"Their very presence will actually raise money for the mission of this community," said Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum of the synagogue, which now holds services in rented space. "The synagogue wants a building so we're hoping this will help us get a building."

I was reading that as 10 gigabucks, and a little disappointed at the real number.
Brilliant! That is so tremendously cool. I'm passing this story on to my mother, and I'm sure she'll pass it on to one of her friends in Louisiana, whose town had a brief infection with WBC a few years ago.
I just love it when Fundys play into their enemies' hands.
I wonder how they'll react to know they unwittingly did "the Devil's work". XD
Many places have cheerfully informed the WBC folks that every minute the WBC are there [cause] gets so many $.
Often results in the WBC folks turning around and going home.
In this case, a nice "thank you" note might be in order.

Ohhhh yeah... That would be priceless. One thing to remember about these folks, they evince neither imagination or sense of humor, thus when faced by either (or both!) become seriously confused and retreat. I believe I've posted this link before, but what the hey... | |
