I was there in the early 80's.

You can't imagine a place so desolate.

Nothing but a sterile lava field as far as the eye can see ending in the silhouette of the volcano it came out of pointing to the sky.

And on your right, are the flaming ashpits of the mouthing gibber...
Be careful on your left, thats a blank jaboon hole - quite nasty little buggers - rip your face off, just so they can have a better look at you...

And over here, we have the entrance to the gates of hell. Please notice the coin slot, and the broken dollar bill machine... yes, that was done on purpose.

The photographer who took that put up some other pictures of his visit on Panoramio, which is where I got that one.
